American National Ballet Artistic Staff

Artistic Director: Octavio Martin

Born in Havana Cuba, Octavio Martin received his dance training at the Cuban National Ballet School “Alejo Carpentier.” Mr. Martin joined the National Ballet of Cuba in 1994 under the direction of internationally renowned Alicia Alonso, and in 2001 was promoted to Primer Bailarin. During his twelve illustrious years at the National Ballet of Cuba, Mr. Martin danced throughout the world representing Cuba in galas, festivals and theatres, as well as dancing many times for Fidel Castro. In 2004, Martin was awarded the “Alejo Carpentier” medal, one of the highest honors an Artist can receive in Cuba. In spite of his great love for his country, in 2007 Mr. Martin defected to America to pursue his passion beyond what would be possible in Cuba. Continuing his pursuit of artistic excellence he quickly rose again to principal dancer, soon thereafter expanding his skills to Choreographer, Artistic Director and Producer. He has created many original ballets including Dracula, Hansel and Gretel, Aladdin, The Nutcracker, and many more. ANB is thrilled to have such a world renowned artist leading the charge as it seeks to change lives by changing the culture through ballet and the classical arts.
